TRANSCRIPT: Welcome, and thank you for taking this personal journey of self reflection and learning through the Equity Experience. In module 2 we grounded ourselves in the importance of replacing color blind ideology with being color brave. In module 3 we introduced you to the concept of social identities and how culture and race are often the center of our identity and why it matters. Now in module 4 we will explore the danger of the single story and the impact such narratives have on all of us. In that vein I wanted to share with you all some of my different identities. I am a Latina, I am an educator, I am a mother, and I am a female. I’m also a friend and a twin sister. Yet, at times in my life I’ve experienced the danger of the single story. As a woman, and specifically a Latina woman, I’ve been viewed through the lens attached to the assumptions that people hold. As recently as this past year I’ve been in situations in which people assumed I’m not the leader or in a supervisory capacity, based on their views of the single identity, and I’ve had to correct their thinking. That is why it is so important that we engage in this work and reflect on module 4. None of us have a single story. By sharing with one another and reflecting on the single stories we may hold, I hope we can continue on this journey together. I look forward to continuing the work with
you on the continuing modules in equity. Thank you.
