I. “The pruning” {vv. 1-3}
Who are the branches that God cuts off?
those who are not bearing fruit
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV `84

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand.” John 10:28 NIV `84
What does it mean to be “pruned”?
to be disciplined/ trained; to cut off the “dead” parts of our life; to remove some “good” so we can focus on doing our best in the remaining areas

What is the “fruit” we bear?
could be more Christians
“Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” John 4:35 NIV `84
could be the fruits of the Spirit
“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentle-ness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 NIV `84

II. “The propagating” {vv. 4-5}
What does it mean to “remain” in Christ?
to be connected to Christ in an intimate relationship that allows Him to work in and through you to produce “fruit”
“10 If you obey My commands, you will remain in My love, just as I have obeyed My Father’s commands and remain in His love. 11 I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” John 15:10-11 NIV `84
What are the evidences of “remaining” in Christ?
you will “bear fruit”; you will have a powerful prayer life; you will have the love and joy of Christ in you; you will have Christ’s life within you
“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” I John 4:16 NIV `84

How does “remaining” in Christ affect our prayers?
He will guide us in our prayers so they are in line with God’s heart and our prayers will be answered
How do we honor God?
by showing we are God’s disciples by bearing “fruit”
